Education in Spain
Education in Spain – this is a great opportunity to get European education. Many people are attracted to the prices; some of them see this as an opportunity to get a European diploma, for others it is a chance to learn more about the culture and national customs of the country, maybe even staying there to live and work after finishing higher education. Everyone has their own reasons for choosing education in Spain. Here are some of the reasons, why people choose to be educated in Spain;
Languages for education: Spanish, English.
Most of the schools and Universities offer education in the state language. There are also so called English and American schools which offer education in English, choosing Spanish as a second language. These schools are very popular among children from non-native families who do not know Spanish so well.
NB! When entering a Spanish University, the DELE (Diploma de Espanol como Lengua Extranjera) certificate of Spanish language knowledge may be required.
Types of schools and educational institutions
There are three types of educational institutions in Spain - public educational institutions, private educational institutions, and semi-public educational institutions. Given that the specifics of public and private educational institutions are understood, then the specifics of semipublic educational institutions may raise several questions. Semi-public educational institutions are religious schools financed by churches, where importance is given to languages.
The educational system falls into the following steps:
- Pre-school education (from 0 to 6 years). This is free and attendance is not compulsory;
- Elementary education (from 6 to 12 years);
- Secondary school (from 12 to 14 years) attendance is compulsory;
- Bachillerato (from 14 to 16 years), similar to a high school, where students may choose one of three courses: exact sciences, human sciences, or art.
Then the state exams should be taken, and after receiving the results students may apply to enter university. Professional education, or so-called colleges and engineering schools, may become a bridge between school and un iversity. Higher education also falls into three steps – Bachelor’s programmes, Master’s programmes, and Doctoral programmes. There also is an opportunity to attend evening classes, language courses, art courses, and sports. Recently, Business schools have become very popular in Spain among students from non-native families. They are offered exclusive education in English.
