Education in Thailand
Education in Thailand is free for locals. Public schools in Thailand have restrictions regarding children's nationality; therefore expats send their children to private or international schools.
Private schools are bilingual. Lessons are tought in Thai and in English. The standards of teaching over the past decades have improved and have adopted much from the western educational system, which focuses on student-centred learning. The English programme varies from school to school and parents have to look around and compare what’s available. Parents should also be aware that many private schools are religious, since Buddism plays a big role in the country’s culture and people’s mindset. These kinds of schools are the best option for families who are planning to live in Thailand long-term. The educational programme is strong and well developed and achievement-oriented. They offer diverse curricula and extracurricular activities, which means a child can get the best education possible.
Since a lot of foreigners move to Thailand the international schools are no less popular among expats. All of these institutions are accredited by external bodies, and it follows that both learning standards and the criteria for hiring teachers is high. Certain schools prepare students for SAT, A-Level, IGCSE and IB exams. International schools are mostly located in big cities, such as Bangkok and Pattaya. Expat parents should note that popular schools have long waiting lists and admission may be based on language proficiency and academic achievement. Fees for international schools in Thailand tend to be very high, depending on the student's age and the school.
NIST International School is considered to be the best international school in Thailand, closely followed by Bangkok Patana School or British international school and International School Bangkok (ISB).
