Education in Slovenia: kindergartens, schools, universities

Kindergartens

There are two types of kindergartens in Slovenia: public and private. Children are admitted to kindergarten from the age of 11 months until the start of elementary school. State kindergartens offer a single officially approved program. On the other hand, private kindergartens can develop their own educational programs, but they must obtain the approval of the Expert Council for Education of Slovenia.

It should be noted that pre-school education in Slovenia is not mandatory according to the law.

To enroll your child in a public kindergarten, you must first select the desired kindergarten as your first priority. It could be a garden closer to where you live, or one that caught your eye in another area.

School education

In Slovenia, basic school education (osnovna šola) is compulsory and includes the period of education from the first to the ninth grade (razred).

Foreign children residing in Slovenia have the same rights to compulsory basic schooling as Slovenian citizens.

Parents have the right to choose how their child will receive basic education. Options include public schools, private schools, or home schooling.

Universities

Higher education in Slovenia is divided into three stages: bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies. However, there is an opportunity to speed up the learning process by completing a special Single Cycle Program, which combines undergraduate and graduate studies in the chosen specialty.

Slovenian is the official language of instruction in the country, but there are also more than 150 programs offered in English, which opens up additional opportunities for international students. Most universities also provide ample opportunities for quick learning of the Slovenian language directly within the educational process.
